COLDWATER

Granby Reservoir

Ice is coming off fast at Granby Reservoir, and anglers are enjoying fast and furious fishing for all species of trout. The lakes don’t run big here, but they’re biting aggressively at 10-20 feet. Browns and rainbows as long as 24 inches, with some fish 2-4 feet. For lake trout, try using 4-inch tube jigs in glow colors, sweetened with a piece of sucker meat.

WARMWATER

Vallecito Reservoir

Vallecito Reservoir continues to live up to its reputation as the best northern pike water in the southwest. After a long winter, when they eat very little, pike are hungry and very active. They favor shallow water and prefer areas where there are submerged stumps and grasses for them to hide in and ambush their prey. At Vallecito, they congregate primarily at the north end of the reservoir and around islands. Being predators, they are susceptible to lures that resemble other fish, especially rainbow trout, their favorite food at Vallecito.
