Out and about: When most people think of Japan, this is the Japan they are thinking of: Zen gardens, temples and more temples. Samurai and geishas once strolled the cobblestone streets. Even in modern times, Kyoto retains its sense of history. The shopping is very good, especially at a 300-year-old flea market held the 21st of each month.
Travel tip: There are a few backroom shops where old ladies will dress you up as authentic geishas. The price varies from $100-$150. Be sure to find one close to a temple for better photo backdrops. Once in geisha garb, be prepared to be treated like a rock star. Everyone will want a picture.
