State benefits system

Re: “Playing games with state benefits system,” May 5 editorial.

In your editorial, you remind us again that you applauded Gov. Bill Owens on his efforts to fix the state’s broken benefits system. I am always amazed that you ever believed he cares whether the system functions or not. This mess is his responsibility, since he made the decision to implement the system without a backup or parallel system to guard against this very situation. It is almost as if he wanted it to fail, since he acted against the advice of all the directors of the various county social services departments and IT specialists who knew better.

How much has this cost the taxpayers of the various counties in lost wages and additional expenses to try to keep up with the needs of their citizens? What hardships are ongoing for those needy citizens?

The meaning of “faith”

I’m not sure when the change occurred, but it seems to me that we have seen a shift in the general consensus as to the meaning of “faith.” Whenever someone proudly wears the title “person of faith,” it has come to mean a conservative Christian. I know there are many many Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics or whatever religion you care to name who are all “people of faith.” Right-wing Christians show an air of superiority to others that I find disconcerting. I was taught that the “Christian way” was to accept all people and look for the good that most of us have inside. I think the “religious right” should open their eyes to the rest of us, whether we are “people of faith” or, dare I say it, nonbelievers.

Cinco de Mayo cruising

Re: “Residents, activists, police rev up oversight for safe Cinco cruising,” May 5 news story.

The Post’s article on Cinco de Mayo points out what the celebrants will be doing during the four-day event. A major share of the commemoration will be cruising a 6-mile stretch of Federal Boulevard. As in past years, I’m sure there will be plenty of Mexican flag waving, horns tooting and loud shouting between cars. That’s probably as it should be to honor Mexican heritage and culture. The question is, will these young people show the same exuberance and fervor on our nation’s birthday, the 4th of July?

Hockey championship

Re: “Zirnis, defense lift Eagles to CHL title,” May 5 sports story.

Colorado is home to yet another hockey championship, but you might not know it by reading The Denver Post. The Colorado Eagles, in only their second year of existence, captured the Central Hockey League championship this week by defeating the Laredo Bucks 1-0 to win their series, four games to one. This exciting news was relegated to the last page of the sports section.

Come on, guys. There are tens of thousands of starving hockey fans out here who are eager to follow any hockey news. Please, the next time Colorado wins a championship, let’s try to do better for them than the last page!
