Lagunitas India Pale Ale

The country around Petaluma is one of the most beautiful parts of northern California, and its home brewery produces a beautiful beer.

Lagunitas Brewing Co.’s India Pale Ale is a traditional American version of the old British favorite, but it also has some surprises, not the least of which is its peculiar reddish/orange color, more like iced tea than ale.

One of the least hoppy IPAs I’ve tasted, Lagunitas’ unfiltered version nevertheless is a pleasant concoction that lends itself to repeat tastings.

The company says it uses 43 different hops and 65 types of malts in this IPA, seeming overkill for what little comes out of it. A very short-lived head and faint malt aroma won’t please aficionados of the IPA style. Alcohol level (by volume) is 5.7 percent.

Lagunitas beers are distributed nationwide in 11 states, ranging from Washington to Virginia.
