Athletes from Western State won the decathlon and heptathlon Tuesday at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships in Alamosa.
Mountaineers senior Brad Koschel took home the decathlon with 6,912 points. Teammate Ablazah Swofford (6,197) was second, followed by Nebraska-Kearney’s Andrew Smith.
In the heptathlon, Lisa Holeman, a Broomfield High School graduate, came back from more than 100 points down to top Nebraska-Kearney’s Cali Cordes, the RMAC indoor pentathlon champion. Chadron State’s Amanda Owens was third.
After two days of competition and seven events, Adams State held a 14-point lead over Nebraska-Kearney on the men’s side, while the Nebraska-Kearney women lead Adams State by a point.
CSU, DU to regional
The men’s golf teams from Colorado State and the University of Denver were selected to compete at the NCAA West Regional held at Stanford Golf Course from May 19-21.
The Rams will be seeded 18th, the Pioneers 22nd.
Denver is led by sophomore Charlie Soule, whose 71.94 scoring average in 34 rounds tops the Pioneers.
The Rams are one of five Mountain West teams to advance to the regional, along with UNLV, New Mexico, BYU and San Diego State.
In addition, the Air Force’s Tyler Goulding was invited to play as an individual.
While the University of Colorado was shut out, junior Edward McGlasson will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete May 19-21 at the Central Regional.
McGlasson was the Buffs’ stroke average leader at 73.1.
Shorter to start Bolder
Olympic gold medalist and race co-founder Frank Shorter has been named the official starter of the 27th Bolder Boulder 10-kilometer competition on May 30.
The Boulder resident will start all 79 waves beginning at 7 a.m.
After the last wave is launched, Shorter plans to jump in and run to the finish line.
