Boulder – The University of Colorado is seeing a nearly 12 percent drop in freshman applicants, less than the school previously predicted.
The final application tally came to 17,149, compared with 19,334 in 2004, and the freshman class is expected to be 4,900, although a final figure won’t be known until September, according to a news release.
Out-of-state applications dropped 18 percent, and in-state dropped 3 percent. In February, school officials predicted application drops of 19 percent for out-of-state and 4 percent for in-state.
Most of the drop is attributed the high cost of out-of-state tuition, although some people have said recent CU scandals have turned off potential students.
The loss in tuition from 2004 will be $13 million instead of the estimated $15 million.

Iraq bill funds new barracks at post
Some $26 million is in the Iraq spending bill approved Tuesday to build a new barracks at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, according to Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard.

Daniels Fund releases $200,000 in CU grants
The Daniels Fund approved nearly $200,000 in grants for the University of Colorado two months after holding up the grants partly because of concerns about scandals at the school.
Fund president Hank Brown is taking over the presidency at the school in August, but he recused himself from discussions since he felt there might be a conflict of interest.
The grants include $30,000 to expand the ethics program at the Leeds School of Business in Boulder, $50,000 for the Colorado Springs campus for teacher cadet education, and $90,000 for the Denver campus to prepare middle-school students for college.
They were approved at Monday’s board meeting.

Martin D. Karston, 34, of Golden died after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and it rolled two times on westbound Sixth Avenue between Interstate 70 and Indiana Street.

All four people in the 4-Runner were wearing seat belts.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed a vehicle driving the wrong way on westbound Sixth Avenue, to call the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501.
