Where: On the shores of Loch Rannoch in the Highlands
Out and about: Traveling around the countryside of Scotland, we were staying near Loch Rannoch, so we visited it rather than drive two hours to Loch Ness. We traveled through the Highlands and visited the farms our ancestors had occupied. In southwestern Scotland we visited the Bladnoch Distillery, where we joined a small group of international whisky aficionados and bottled two casks (80 gallons) of single malt (there was a wee bit of sampling).
Travel tip: Rent the smallest car you can; the roads are very narrow. Talk to everyone you can, and seek out some of the lesser-known areas.
