Fuel-cell car contest revved to go

Middle-school students from around the state will participate in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Junior Solar Sprint/Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Dakota Ridge High School, 13399 W. Coal Mine Ave.

The competitions give students a chance to show engineering and design skills by building and racing high-performance vehicles.

Twenty-nine teams will compete in the 10-meter solar race, with 23 teams vying on a 20-meter course.

Last school budget hearings slated

Final public hearings on the Jefferson County Schools’ 2005-06 budget will be held during the Board of Education’s regular business meetings at 7 p.m. June 2.

Despite the $38.3 million mill-levy override in November, more budget reductions are being sought by the board and district officials to ensure adequate future funding.

The board has identified more than $3 million in reductions to balance next year’s budget.

Northwest Corridor hearings set

Another series of public meetings has been scheduled by the Colorado Department of Transportation as part of the Northwest Corridor Environmental Impact Statement.

The study covers proposed transportation improvements in the area between the Northwest Parkway in Broomfield and C-470 and Interstate 70 in Jefferson County.

The meetings, which will focus on remaining alignment alternatives, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. May 24 at the Colorado School of Mines’ Green Center, 924 16th St., Golden; May 26 at the Broomfield Community Center, 280 Lamar St., Broomfield; and June 2 at Faith Bible Chapel, 6250 Wright St., Arvada.
