Colorado State sophomore Katie Lloyd took the lead in the javelin and went on to win the heptathlon Thursday at the Mountain West Conference outdoor track and field championships in Fort Collins.

Lloyd finished with 5,141 points. BYU’s Liis Berendsen was second with 5,056 points. Janine Polischuk of San Diego State finished third, and CSU junior Cristina Gourdin was fourth.

Lloyd leaped 18 feet, 6 inches to finish third in the long jump, then was third in the javelin with a throw of 121-6 and ended the day with a personal best of 2 minutes, 26.80 seconds in the 800 meters to win the event.

Lightning halted the men’s decathlon in the middle of the pole vault.

CSU hoops hire assistant

Former Virginia Tech player and Campbell (N.C.) University assistant coach Myron Guillory has been hired as an assistant coach for Colorado State’s men’s basketball team.

Guillory played at Tech from 1994-98 and helped the Hokies to an NIT championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Dunlap helps U-21 team

Mike Dunlap of Metro State is one of three collegiate head basketball coaches selected to help the U.S. men’s under-21 team during tryouts for the national team in July.

Dunlap joins Jeremy Cox of Arkansas-Fort Smith and Paul Patterson of Taylor (Ind.) University. They will assist head coach Phil Martelli of Saint Joseph’s and assistants Dennis Felton of Georgia and James “Bruiser” Flint of Drexel as court coaches. The team trials are July 21-23 at the Dallas Mavericks’ practice facility.

Aztecs upset Rams

Third-seeded Colorado State has only one loss to work with at the Mountain West Conference softball tournament in San Diego after losing to No. 6 seed San Diego State 6-0. The Aztecs (27-28) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Erin Mahoney scored on an error.

CSU (29-21) plays Utah (21-28) today.

Mavericks win at RMAC

No. 1-seeded Mesa State scored six runs in the first and seven in the eighth in pounding No. 4 Fort Hays State (30-21) 15-4 at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Grand Junction.

Willie Hinojosa, Ben Thompson and Kevin Mackey homered for the Mavericks (45-12). Mackey was 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Hinojosa also had three RBIs. Every Mesa batter had at least one hit. Sergio Romo (13-1) went the distance on the mound against the Tigers (30-21).

In the first game, Brendon Hampton singled in pinch-runner Darren Wheat to give No. 3 seed New Mexico Highlands a 7-6 win over No. 2 Colorado State-Pueblo (30-26).

Justin Muñoz (12-1) pitched eight innings and got the win for Highlands (36-16). Jeff Williams (10-6) took the loss, despite pitching a complete game.

New Mexico Highlands will play Mesa State at 3 p.m. The Thunderwolves and Fort Hays play an elimination game at 11 a.m.

Jennings wins stroke play

Barry Jennings of Fox Hill Country Club finished at 4-under-par 140, beating 19 other golfers to win the Colorado Section PGA individual stroke play tournament at Vista Ridge Golf Course in Erie.
