DIA raising daily rate for close-in parking

The daily rate for parking in Denver International Airport’s close-in garages will jump to $18 from the current $15 beginning June 15, airport officials said Friday.

At the same time, the daily rate in the adjacent economy-parking lots will go from $7 to $9.

The hourly garage rate of $2 and the economy lots’ hourly rate – $1 – will stay the same. Also, the daily charge at DIA’s satellite parking areas – the Pikes Peak lot on Peña Boulevard and the Mt. Elbert lot, south of the cargo complex – will remain at $5.

On many weekdays, all parking spaces in DIA’s garage and economy lots are filled, and officials said they hope the price increase will lead some travelers to switch to the remote lots, balancing demand for the airport’s 34,000 spaces.

Next year, the airport plans to build another parking garage, adding about 2,000 more spaces on the southwest corner of DIA’s terminal. Also, 3,500 spaces should be added to the Pikes Peak lot by year’s end, said DIA spokesman Chuck Cannon.

Even with the price hike, DIA’s close-in parking is less than at some other U.S. airports, Cannon said. At Los Angeles International Airport, travelers pay $30 a day for garage parking in the central terminal area. Close-in parking at San Francisco International costs $28 a day.
