For the third time in five years, University of Colorado runners won titles in the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters at the Big 12 Conference outdoor track and field championships.
Brent Vaughn and Sara Slattery accomplished the feat Sunday on the final day of the championships in Manhattan, Kan.
Slattery, who won her third title in the 5,000, and Vaughn set meet records.
Vaughn finished in 13 minutes, 53.01 seconds, while Slattery’s time was 15:58.58.
The Texas Tech men won their first title with 149.5 points, pulling ahead of defending league champion Nebraska. CU finished seventh.
Nebraska’s women held off two-time defending champion Texas for their first championship since 2000. The CU women were ninth.
Slattery and Dathan Ritzenhein won in 2002, and Slattery and Jorge Torres in 2003.
The University of Northern Colorado’s Kelley Cobb ended her college career by winning the javelin (145 feet, 3 inches) at the Division I Independent track and field championships in Davis, Calif.

Cassie Abel scored 38 seconds into double overtime to give the Colorado College women’s lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over SUNY-Cortland. The win moves the Tigers into Saturday’s Division III national semifinals in Ewing, N.J.

In Manhattan, Kan., UNC was blanked by Kansas State 9-0. The Bears (19-32) have lost four straight.
U.S. elite triathlete Hunter Kemper of Colorado Springs finished second in a mini-triathlon in Ishigaki, Japan. Matt Reed of Boulder was sixth.
The University of Colorado men’s golf team closed out its season by finishing in 10th place at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla.
The Buffs (22-over-par 862) finished 47 strokes behind tournament-winner Oklahoma State.
