Steamboat Springs – The Steamboat Springs City Council has banned smoking in bars, workplaces, athletic fields and outdoor amphitheaters as of July 1.
The council approved the ban 6-1 Tuesday night after turning down a proposal to put the plan up to a public vote.
The council has been discussing the issue since fall.
The state legislature rejected a statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants this year.
Advocates have said they will focus on persuading individual cities to impose such bans.
