The University of Northern Colorado baseball team finished its season Sunday by winning the Division I Independent Invitational tournament in Greeley.
A three-run homer by third baseman Brennan Garr, a sophomore from Ralston Valley High School, helped the Bears (22-34) rout the New York Institute of Technology 8-3 and go 3-0 overall in the four-team field.
Waner among finalists
Former ThunderRidge basketball star Abby Waner, a guard who has signed to play at Duke, was named one of 15 finalists for the U.S. women’s under-19 world championship roster.
The U.S. roster will be cut to 12 players during training camp.
Reser takes gold in judo
Ryan Reser of Colorado Springs won the gold medal at 73 kilograms at the Pan American Judo Union senior championships in Caguas, Puerto Rico.
Barb Lindquist of Alta, Wyo., won a mini-triathlon in Tempe, Ariz. Jasmine Oeinck of Littleton was fourth, Denver’s Karen Melliar-Smith was 11th and Kelly Handel of Manitou Springs was 15th. Men’s finishers included Bucky Schafer of Englewood (19th) and William Iaia of Highlands Ranch (22nd).
