McEwan’s Scotch Ale
Before the roasty days of summer descend on us, there’s time to try one more “big” cool-weather beer.
McEwan’s Scotch Ale is sometimes called a “wee heavy” in beer vernacular because of its high malt content, strong flavors and an abundance of alcohol (8 percent by volume). Rookie beer drinkers need not apply.
An exceedingly dark beer with subtle redness glowing through the dark, it has an aroma and flavor that reeks of butterscotch – typical of the style – and an abundant sweetness with just-right bitter finish. The sweetness hides a potent alcohol jolt, so be careful.
Made in Edinburgh, Scotland, McEwan’s Scotch Ale is for export only, mainly to North America. The brewery was founded in 1856 but since a merger in 1995 has been known as Scottish Courage. The company is one of the largest brewers in Europe.
