The Central Hockey League may bring a second minor- league team to the Front Range, this one in Broomfield, where a $45 million, 6,000-seat arena is scheduled to open late next year. The Colorado Eagles, who play in Loveland, won the CHL championship this past season.
Proposed franchise owners include John Frew, former general manager of the Grand Prix of Denver, and Tim Wiens, a banker and real estate executive whose company owns the property where the arena will be built. They are meeting with the CHL today through Saturday at a hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz., to discuss their proposed franchise. The league’s 17 members could vote on the expansion proposal during the meetings.
Eagles general manager Ralph Backstrom, whose club has played before 71 consecutive home sellouts, confirmed that the possible Broomfield franchise would be discussed at the meetings.
