Lakewood – When the call went out for old U.S. flags to be retired, West Metro Fire Protection District officials never figured that nearly 2,000 would be donated.
Help is needed in preparing the flags for destruction by burning. The ceremony requires each flag to first have the field of blue removed, followed by each of the stripes.
Each flag takes about 20 minutes to prepare, and West Metro estimates it will take about 660 hours to finish the processing.
West Metro will hold a flag-preparation session today for those interested in volunteering. The district also needs auto-body shears to speed up the process. For more information, call Micki Trost, 303-989-4307, ext. 554.
