Real estate women schedule ’07 confab

The Denver chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women announced Thursday that the organization’s 2007 convention will be held at the new Hyatt Convention Center Hotel downtown.

The four-day event is expected to attract 1,000 people specializing in commercial real estate. CREW has about 6,000 members in the United States and Canada.

IT hiring forecast dips for 3rd quarter

A net 7 percent of chief information officers in the Denver area expect to hire information technology professionals in the third quarter, according to the most recent Robert Half Technology Information Technology Hiring Index and Skills Report.

Twelve percent of executives surveyed plan to add staff during the quarter while 5 percent anticipate reductions in personnel.

The net 7 percent hiring increase is down a percentage point from the second-quarter 2005 forecast.

Laptops power Intel’s computer-chip sales

Intel Corp., the world’s biggest computer-chip maker, said second-quarter revenue will beat its previous forecasts, propelled by surging sales of laptops.

Sales will rise to $9.1 billion to $9.3 billion, exceeding the $8.6 billion to $9.2 billion predicted in April, Santa Clara-based Intel said in a statement Thursday.

Intel raised its gross margin prediction to about 57 percent from about 56 percent, helped by lower costs and sales of more profitable chips.

Buyer still in market for bidding on NYSE

Billionaire Ken Langone is still studying the value of the New York Stock Exchange in advance of his making a possible bid for the world’s largest stock market, he said in an interview Thursday.

The co-founder of Home Depot Inc. and chairman of investment bank Invemed Associates Inc. has been considering making an offer along with other investors since the NYSE agreed to buy Archipelago Holdings Inc., an electronic stock market, on April 20.

Ex-exec at Berkshire pleads guilty in probe

John Houldsworth, a former executive at Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s General Re unit who agreed to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors this week, pleaded guilty to helping American International Group Inc. distort its finances.

Houldsworth, 46, was charged with one count of conspiring to file false financial reports, which carries a prison term of as much as five years.

He entered his plea Thursday in federal court in Alexandria, Va., fulfilling an agreement with the Department of Justice announced Monday.

First Data to acquire E. European foothold

First Data Corp., a provider of electronic commerce and payment services, agreed to acquire EuroProcessing International, a leading card processor in Central and Eastern Europe, from Reiten & Co Capital Partners V AS, a Nordic private equity company.

The deal will give First Data a foothold in Eastern Europe and the Nordic region.

AremisSoft ex-CEO to settle fraud case

Former AremisSoft Corp. chief executive Roys Poyiadjis agreed to pay about $200 million to settle U.S. regulator’s allegations he defrauded investors.

Poyiadjis and another former company chairman, Lycourgos Kyprianou, helped inflate the revenue of the international software company in 2001 and traded on that inside information, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday in a litigation release. The Westmont, N.J.-based company filed for bankruptcy in 2002.

Stewart firm to sell furniture at Kmart

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., the media and housewares company whose founder was released from prison in March, will bolster its merchandise unit, selling ready-to-assemble furniture through Sears Holdings Corp.’s Kmart stores.

The collection, including pieces for the bedroom, kitchen and living room, went on sale Thursday, said Julia Jensen, a spokeswoman for Kmart. The Martha Stewart Living product line also includes bedding, cooking pots, and bath accessories.

Senators seek return of 30-year bond sales

A bipartisan group of 19 U.S. senators called on Treasury Secretary John Snow Thursday to resume the sale of 30-year bonds, which the government last month said it would consider after a four-year hiatus, according to an aide to Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J.

The Treasury, seeking to finance record budget deficits, said May 4 it may consider resuming sales of the bonds.

XM Satellite Radio places public shares

Satellite radio broadcaster XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. said Thursday it has placed about 9.7 million of its common shares in a public offering, resulting in gross proceeds of about $300 million.

Denver-based Apex Silver Mines Limited appointed Terry L. Owen as senior vice president, project development. … Cambridge, Mass.-based Babson Capital Management LLC promoted Bill Glavin to chief executive and Roger Crandall to chairman, replacing Stuart Reese, named last week to head corporate parent MassMutual Financial Group.
