Blue 67 (1475 Lawrence St.) is due for a makeover, and it’s getting a major one later this month. The downtown martini lounge will be closing for two weeks starting the last week of June and reopening July 8 as 5 with a new look, a new menu and a new concept.
Owner Francois Safieddine is taking the space in a new direction, focusing more on food, with a new American menu designed by Eric Roeder of Bistro Vendome. The martini list still will be significant, inspiring the name of the new restaurant/bar, with 48 varieties served at 5 degrees – said to be the ideal temperature for vodka martinis.
The remodel is still to come, but Safieddine plans to team again with longtime design collaborator Jeffrey Elliott, who did the original design of Blue 67 along with Safieddine’s Monarck, Mynt and Karma lounges.

Sexy and sensual
Another downtown club just had a recent facelift. The space that used to house the Alley Cat nightclub above the Diamond Cabaret at 1222 Glenarm Place opens at 10 tonight as Tabu. Rumors have been swirling about the space for some time, with some people telling me the club will resemble the topless club downstairs more than a typical dance club.
The new space boasts both a lounge and a dance area, with a snazzy new interactive lighting system built into the lounge tables to provide ever-changing computer graphics. It’s supposed to be sexy and sensual (not to be confused with the old tiki bar of the same name that once served up Volcanos and Scorpions on Wazee Street). Just how provocative it really is remains to be seen this weekend during the grand opening.
A busy DJ
Ahmir Thompson, aka DJ ?uestlove (pronounced Questlove) has a long night ahead of him tonight.
As the drummer for The Roots, he’ll be opening the show for Wilco at Red Rocks, then switching into DJ mode for a special three-hour set at Allure nightclub (1111 Lincoln St.). He’s expected at 10:30 p.m. “on the dot,” according to DJ Style N. Fashion , who spins beforehand and tipped me off about some great deals on VIP packages for the night.
To help promote Danzka infused vodkas, the club is offering a limited number of bottle service and admission deals; at $75 for two people and $165 for groups of four (including a bottle of vodka, mixers, and champagne), it’s less than half the regular price. Call 720-205-0155 for VIP reservations. Regular admission is $10, doors open at 9 p.m.
Riverfront happenings
You can drink in the view of downtown from the Millennium Bridge (aka the ship mast) at a series of fashion and wine events all summer long at Riverfront Park. The first show, dubbed The Magic Hour, kicked off the series Thursday night with a Betsey Johnson fashion show paired with New Zealand wines.
It’s a killer venue for a summertime soiree, so if you missed it, try to make one of the three other events scheduled over the next three months. Next up is a French-inspired fashion show by Neiman Marcus on July 14 (Bastille Day) paired with French wine tasting, followed by a Spanish-themed fashion show by downtown boutique Mariel with Spanish wines on Aug. 18. The final event featuring California style by Skye and California wines is on Sept. 15.
Tickets range from $20 for general admission to $295 for a reserved table for six with open wine bar; visit riverfrontfashion.com.
