Who: Judy and Ivan Botvin, Centennial, and her mother, Charlotte Kaminsky, Denver
Where: Southeast coast of Alaska, via Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Dream
Out and about: Appropriately, our dream trip to Alaska was aboard the Norwegian Dream. The 10-day cruise departed from and returned to Seattle, providing a safe and comfortable way for a three-generation family to travel together. Charlotte Kaminsky, a native Denverite, was on her third visit to Alaska. This time, she enjoyed seeing her daughter and granddaughter gasp at their first sight of Alaska’s breathtaking panorama. Most exciting was a small- boat excursion that took us close enough to the great Hubbard Glacier to hear it groan and crack in the awesome process of “calving.”
Travel tip: Most travelers to Alaska know they should pack warm clothes to wear in layers, but some are unprepared for the occasional sunny weather. On this cruise, we escaped the rain that is so common to southeastern Alaska, enjoying sunshine every day and several warm days deck-side. Even on a cruise that welcomes casual dress, don’t hesitate to bring along dressy outfits if you want to. You’ll still be able to dine with your “sporty” travel partners – and you’ll be ready for dancing too! While the cruise ship offers inviting shore-side excursions, the more independent-minded passenger also can find trips and tours available at each port.
