Aurora – One person was shot and killed and two people were wounded after an argument escalated at the Aurora Mall tonight. It happened just before 7:30 p.m.

The shooting happened on the stairs close to the arcade on the lower level of the mall, near Sears.

It started when a couple walked out of a store, and got into an argument with two or more young men, said Aurora Police spokesman Rudy Herrera. He said that someone pulled a gun and shots were fired. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and two people were hospitalized.

A woman in her 50s or 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. Herrera says she may have been an innocent bystander.

The young man and woman apparently involved in the argument were also hit and rushed to the hospital. The 25-year-old man was shot in the head and in surgery. The woman was listed in fair condition.

Herrera said there were numerous witnesses to the shooting. An off-duty officer and security guard were the first to respond. Witnesses pointed the alleged shooters out to police who chased them through the mall and out the south side JC Penney entrance, Herrera said. The two male suspects were taken into custody and two hand guns were recovered, he said.

“We’re fairly confident we have the right people,” Herrera said.

Police cleared the mall and detained witnesses to interview.
