COLDWATER: Dillon Reservoir

For the first time in five years, Dillon Reservoir has reached “fill-and- spill” level, sending heavier than usual flows into the Blue River and setting the stage for some epic fly-fishing. As Trapper Rudd of Cutthroat Anglers explained it, the spillover of warm surface water from Dillon will generate a lot of bug hatches by raising river temperatures, while flushing more mysis shrimp into the tailwater and dispersing the bigger fish that hang out there.

WARMWATER: Martin Lake

Any reservoir stocked with northern pike can be a hot spot at this time of year, when the toothy predators move into the shallows to spawn and feed on smaller fish until warmer surface temperatures send them deep. Good pike waters can be found all across the state; the best include Stagecoach and Williams Fork reservoirs in the northwest, Taylor Reservoir in the southwest, Martin Lake in the southeast and Spinney Mountain Reservoir on the Front Range.
