Brig. Gen. Johnny Weida, the commandant of cadets at the Air Force Academy, was counseled about a perception that he proselytized to cadets, according to Lt. Gen. Roger Brady, who led a task force that issued a report Wednesday on the religious climate at the academy.

Weida remains under investigation by the Air Force inspector general for flashing the “J for Jesus” sign, prompting cadets to respond with, “Rocks.”

Brady said he felt that the “J for Jesus” incident was wrong and said, “If he (Weida) had it to do over again, he wouldn’t do that.”

Asked whether Weida should be punished for it, Brady said: “No, I think he already has been. I think we’ve pulled him through a cactus patch.”

A record of the counseling was not placed in Weida’s personnel file, Brady said.
