The debut of the free Spanish-language weekly La Tribuna in January exposed ethnic divisions in Greeley and intensified anti-immigrant hatred. The backlash included an exchange that Greeley Tribune editor Chris Cobler wrote about on his blog:
“A newspaper threatens some Anglos in ways that Spanish DVDs at Blockbuster do not. … This feeling led a 73-year-old Anglo woman to cancel her subscription to the Tribune.
“I called her back to try to understand why a separate publication should affect the enjoyment of her hometown newspaper.
“She launched into a barrage while barely taking a breath.
“‘I raised 11 daughters on my own,’ she said. ‘These pigs come here, get welfare and leave their kids alone.’ …
“She described being in the emergency room two weeks ago. She said she has cancer and ‘just about everything wrong with me.’ She said she waited 2 1/2 hours because the ‘ER was filled with Mexicans who have sniffles.”‘
