What is the best way to put out a campfire?

Drown it. Mix the ashes with dirt, making sure embers are not clinging to partially burned sticks. Add more water. Stir it up and make an ash-and-dirt soup. Touch the coals and rocks around the fire to make sure they have cooled. Add more water. Look for stray embers around camp and then, you got it, add more water.
