ADVENTURE RACE ATHLETE

Adamson, 40, is one of the most decorated adventure racing athletes in the world. In addition to a slew of world records and adventure racing world championships, the Boulder resident is a race director, author, television host and public speaker.

What is your best training technique?

Variety is my best training technique. This allows me to stay injury-free, motivated and have fun. I am fortunate as an adventure athlete to have too many sports to choose from, although the core fitness sports are running, biking and paddling.

What is your worst injury?

I broke a toe in the 1996 Eco-Challenge, which was painful but not nearly as bad as the codeine I took for the pain! I ended up going off the medication because it prevented me thinking clearly.

Most frightening moment?

At one point in the 1997 Eco-Challenge we were scrambling up a class 5 cliff, and it started disintegrating around us. The exposure was significant, and I remember sweating pure fear and adrenaline as loose dirt and rocks evaporated into the void below us.

How do you push through mental fatigue?

Pushing through mentally when times are tough is a matter of focusing on the big picture. I prefer to think of what we need to do to win/finish/get a beer at the end when I am in a mental lull.

Who do you admire most?

Earnest Shackleton – his physical and mental toughness, leadership and decision-making abilities are legendary.

What music revs you up for a big race?

I usually need something mellow. Buddha Bar is currently loaded on my MP3.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Moderation in all things, especially moderation.

What is your most essential tool when it comes to racing?

A small folding knife is indispensable. It can be used for fixing things, medical uses, cutting free of a tangled rope, making peanut butter sandwiches.
