Editor’s note: Thirteen-year-old Becky Rodenburg of Arvada wrote this poem in honor of the Fourth of July.
One flag of three colors,
For all kinds of faces,
A banner of glory,
For all different races.
Laughing under the flag,
On a bright sunny day,
But a tear rolls down,
For the soldiers who pay.
Daring young soldiers,
Who gave up their lives,
Who gave us our freedom,
Missing families and wives.
Giving us choices,
To live and be free,
Giving us safety,
To let me be me.
Laws for the people,
All over the land,
When someone needs help,
We all lend a hand.
Opportunities for me,
For a good education,
Allows for some choices,
Within our great nation.
Respect for the colors,
Of Red, White and Blue,
During all of our wars,
Every one of them flew.
Years have gone by,
And we’ve lived to be free,
All of the people,
With you and with me.
