Who: Susan Baker (Fort Collins), Stu Knapp (Denver), John and Kris Wallack (Conifer)
Where: Plaza de Mulas, Argentina, South America (base camp for Aconcagua)
Out and about: Four members of the High Altitude Mountaineering Section of the Colorado Mountain Club successfully summitted the highest mountain in South America on Monday, December 27, 2004. Rising 22,841 feet in elevation above sea level, Aconcagua is one of the “Seven Summits”, and is the highest mountain south of the equator. The scale of this mountain is truly amazing.
From the nearest road, it took the team more than a week to reach the summit. The three-week trip was a mix of backcountry adventure and city sightseeing. Mendoza, the capital city of the Province founded in 1561 is rich in culture along with modern conveniences.
Travel tip: Hire a good outfitter. Reliable ground transportation, lodging, meals and support services lead to our success. Our group stayed healthy, hydrated and well fed. The outfitter Aymara did a fantastic job for us.
