Who: Lorraine and Jim Adams of Cherry Hills Village, CO

Where: D’Agostini Glacier on Tierra del Fuego, Chile; Mare Australis cruise through the Chilean fiords, February 14, 2005

Out and about: We took a four day cruise from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina (the southernmost town in the world). The cruise takes you through the Magellan Straits and the many fiords of the area. Everywhere there are beautiful mountains, waterfalls and glaciers. There are two shore excursions each day via zodiac rafts. We saw penguins, elephant seals, cormorants, condors and seals. The grand finale was the Beagle Channel and the Avenue of the Glaciers.

Travel tips: Since the Mare Australis is the only ship currently making this trip, reservations need to be made six months in advance. Forget what you’ve heard about the cold, rainy, windy weather in this part of the world, we mostly had warm, sunny days. Include a trip to Torres del Paine National Park near Punta Arenas for equally spectacular scenery.
