Who: Harvey Wittmier

Where: Pt. Lenana on Mt. Kenya, Kenya, East Africa

Out and About: Mt. Kenya is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa at just over 17,000 feet in elevation(Kilimanjaro is the highest). I climbed the trekker’s peak, Pt. Lenana. Mt. Kenya to raise funds for orphaned children in Kenya. The weather is similar to Colorado in the summer clear skies in the morning and clouds and rain showers in the afternoon, especially at the higher elevations. Plan to reach the top of Mt. Kenya in early morning and you’ll see the Indian Ocean to the east and Mt. Kilimanjaro to the south.

Travel Tip: You can hike to Point Lenana without technical equipment in two days if you’re really in shape and acclimated to the altitude. I recommend reaching the summit on the 3rd day. One person is my group of 3 got altitude sickness and did not complete the climb. Hire a guide out of Nairobi or Nanyuki and ascend by the Sirimon Route and descend by any other route for a variety of beautiful scenery. The guide will hire porters at Nanyuki if you want someone to carry your pack (recommended unless you’re an experienced backpacker).
