During a one-time setup procedure, water is poured into a valve in the vinyl exterior (the valve is then closed permanently), and the foam core soaks up the liquid. The resulting fluid-bloated flexible mass absorbs heat from the warmer pooch and dissipates it into the surrounding air, making the dog feel cooler.
