Where: Akumal, on the Mayan Riviera coast
Out and about: Our family takes a “Girls Only” trip once a year. The villa we rented on the Mayan Riviera coast was affordable (per week) with breathtaking views! The town of Akumal, which means Sea Turtle, is a laid back scuba-diving town about a half-hour south of Playa Del Carmen. Akumal has cozy beachfront restaurants and easy-access snorkeling or diving just outside your front door. We saw many sea turtles and marine wildlife throughout the course of the week, without getting on a boat. The best part of this nontourist village is that it provides a relaxing and truly authentic Mexico experience.
Travel tip: Go to locogringo.com to check out available beachfront villas and houses to rent. Mayan chefs can be hired to visit your villa and cook delicious, authentic meals. It was more cost-
effective than eating out for our large group of travelers. To arrive in Akumal, you fly into Cancun and take an hour-and-a-half shuttle or taxi from the airport.
