Who: Tom Hyland of Golden, Colorado
Where: Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Burj Al Arab hotel in the background.
Out and about: Though it was a business trip, I was able to spend an entire day being shown the many different sites of Dubai. I know of no other city in the world where so much building is going on. Huge building cranes dot the skyline in all directions. Dubai will soon be home to the tallest building in the world and the building is not just occurring on land. They are presently building a collection of off shore islands that when viewed from space will look like a map of the world. They are also working on three massive developments at sea that are in the shape of palm trees. I found Dubai to be a city of extreme wealth. When describing Dubai, my local friend said it best: “From Camel to Cadillac in 40 Years”.
Travel Tip: The best time to visit Dubai is December through March. The temperature averages around 75 F and most of the popular events occur during this time. These include the Dubai Desert Classic (golf), Dubai Rugby 7s, Dubai Tennis Championships, and the Dubai World Cup (horse racing). Avoid the months of July and August as temperatures can climb into the 110s with 95% humidity.
