Who: Left: Jim and Lee Kummer of Lakewood, Warren and Claudette Cobb of Brighton and Wayne and Norma Redman of Arvada.

Where: Township of Hell, Grand Cayman, B.W.I.

Out and About: While on a cruise through the Panama Canal, the couples visited Grand Cayman for touring and snorkeling. We visited the government-supported turtle farm, where turtles are raised to be released into the wild. Turtles were nearly driven to extinction because the early sailing ships would capture turtles to keep while at sea as a live source of meat. The Caymans were originally called the Turtle Islands. We also visited Hell, so named for its hellish rock formations. Grand Cayman is regarded as the birthplace for amateur Scuba Diving.

Travel Tip: Grand Cayman suffered substantial damage during hurricane Ivan, and is still recovering. Its terrain is low in altitude and in forestation. The 200+ mph winds stripped much of the foliage off trees as well as damaging buildings and boats. Tourists are well-treated there, but expect to see evidence of the devastation for some time to come.
