Where:The ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal in northern Guatemala

Out and about: During a two-week trip to Guatemala, one of our favorite places was Tikal which is an impressive Mayan archeological site. Towering pyramids stick out of the jungle’s green canopy. Howler monkeys swing noisily through the trees and you hear the songs of many jungle birds. There are a total of six big magnificent temples, constructed by the Mayan civilization more than 1000 years ago. We had fun climbing the pyramids and exploring the plazas around them. Tikal is a magnificent place for anyone who wants a good adventure and a new experience.

Travel Tips: For best weather, go there December to February when the weather is dry and not too hot. We were there in late December and the weather was ideal. The rainy season May to October can be miserable and muddy. For more jungle adventure, take a canopy tour such as the Ixpanpajul Sky Way where you can glide through the tree tops on cables and walk through the jungle on impressive hanging bridges. If you travel on your own, knowing some basic Spanish is helpful.
