Who: Carol Ann and Paul Rothman of Denver, Colorado
Where: Hay-on Wye, Wales
Out and About: Hay-on Wye whose eastern boundaries border England, is a small, eccentric town of 1,400 people. It is known as the “Town of Books” as it has 38 second-hand and antiquarian book shops to browse and search. Spectacular countryside surrounds the town and there are narrow little roads to drive on and many walking trails of varying levels. The town’s castle, which was built in 1200, is owned by Richard Booth the man who started the first bookstore here in 1961. His vision has created a town for book lovers.
Travel Tip: You can drive from London in half a day and enjoy the countryside along the way. The Tourist Office has maps of the town, lists of bookshops
and suggestions for drives and hikes in the area. There are many delightful B n B’s, which include the full English breakfast and are quite reasonable.
