Who: Peter and Cindy Wang of Greenwood Village
Where: Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Out and About: The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the
world until they were surpassed by the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan in 2004. Highlights in KL (as the city is called by the locals), include the Petronas Towers and the Golden Triangle area for shopping, Chinatown with a refurbished former produce market, the colonial district with its breathtaking Victorian/Moorish architecture, and the
mosques of Masjid Negara and Masjid Jamek. We also visited outside of KL to Batu Caves with a Hindi Temple, Genting Highlands with massive amusement/gambling complexes, and the new government city of Putrajaya.
Travel Tip: Before leaving the secured area of Kuala Lumpur
International Airport, after the baggage claim, buy a fixed-fare taxi coupon to avoid being overcharged for your ride into KL. For free tickets to the Petronas Towers’ sky bridge, arrive in line early in the morning because the attraction is popular and tickets run out fast. When visiting a mosque, use the robes provided to cover up if you’re not in appropriate attire. The best way to see the outlying areas from KL is to hire a taxi driver for the day. Rates are negotiable and usually start from US$11/hr.
