Who: (l to r) Richard Buchanan of Leavenworth, Kansas; Matt and Jo Buchanan of Pitkin, Colorado
Where: Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet.
Out and About: Our one-month trip included safaris in Kenya and Tanzania and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. In Kenya we visited the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park, the Masai Mara game reserve and spent a night camping with the Masai people. In Tanzania, we visited the Serengeti national park, the Ngorongoro crater conservation area and after meeting our guides and porters in Moshi, Tanzania started out 7 day trek up Mt Kilimanjaro.
Travel Tip: Definitely visit the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater for wildlife viewing and the Masai people to learn about their culture. The people of Tanzania and Kenya are very friendly and helpful. Be prepared for poor roads and “Africa time” (Scheduled times are really just a guide). Avoid the two rainy seasons; mid March through June and October and November.
