Where: Chateau de Versailles, France
Out and About: Our family vacation to Paris included a day at Versailles, where King Louis IV built his opulent and enormous palace to get away from Paris, which he considered too rowdy. Can you say conspicuous consumption? The lines are long and the palace is currently undergoing a 17-year restoration, so portions are closed off or hidden by scaffolding, including about half of the famous Hall of Mirrors. The awe-inspiring gardens may be the highlight of the tour because you can escape the crowds and stretch your legs.
Travel Tip: Use side entrance A to avoid long lines and go early; plan to eat at one of the wonderful cafes in the Queen’s Hamlet gardens.
