Who: Larry and Ellen Brown of Centennial, Colorado

Where: Selinute, Sicily

Out and About: We took a seven day self guided bike tour in the Western end of Sicily. We toured small towns along the coast line and rode through the middle of the country, coming close to Corleone. This photo was taken in front of the one standing Greek temple at Selinute on the lower western region of the island. Two other temples are just to the side, but were destroyed centuries ago.

Travel Tip: Sicily is less expensive, and not as “touristy” as main land Italy. We choose active vacations, usually self guided bike tours. This allows us to interact with locals. The Sicilian people were incredibly friendly and helpful, offering us directions and water. It helps to take a basic Italian language course to better understand directions and to communicate with the people. Biking through a country is the best way to experience a different culture. Take a day to visit Palermo, so much history there! The Greek ruins, the Arabic influence and the Norman and Roman architecture is fascinating. The food was wonderful, the weather warm. Bring sunscreen!
