Who: Molly and Clive Bonner of Littleton, Colorado

Where: Siracusa on the southwest coast of Sicily, the ruins of a Roman Amphitheater

Out and About: We were on a tour of Sicily with Grand Circle Travel where we were able to see the countryside, meet the people and learn the history of the island dating back to before 500BC. Sicily, which is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea has never been a nation of its own, but has been conquered by every passing group that has passed through the area over the centuries. Now that they are part of Italy, the population is happy but think of themselves as Sicilian. The island therefore is rich with the historical remains of it’s conquerors.

Travel Tip: Unless you enjoy driving in the crowded streets of the cities, taking a tour where you travel by bus is the easiest mode of transportation. Spring time is a great time to visit as the weather is great and the spring flowers are in bloom. There are many villages and towns high on the tops of hills so take good walking shoes, tourism is a major industry so the Sicilians will welcome you, and sample the cuisine it is great.
