Who: Anna and Allison Dennis of Evergreen, Colorado

Where: Girona Catedral, Girona, Spain

Out and about: Girona is a mind bogglingly ancient city with the style of modern Spain. We used the city as a base allowing access to Mediterranean beaches within an hour and the countryside or Pyrenees in a similar distance. The cathedral was build in 1416 (Baroque facade, interior is Gothic) and possesses the widest nave in the Christian world. The city has been fought over for centuries and bears the scars (of all sorts) with grace.

Travel tip: This is serious Catalonia country where Spanish is not the favored language and often is not spoken at all (many locals would like to split from Spain). It is warm and air conditioning is scarce. Adapt to the local lifestyle of going to bed late and sleeping late to take advantage of the relative coolness of night.
