Who: Left: Don Suriani, Sara Suriani, Lee Ehrmann, Emily Suriani, Elizabeth Suriani, Karen Rutledge, Jonathan Ehrmann and John Ehrmann
Where: The Sepilok Jungle Resort, outside the city Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia
Out and about: The Suriani Family from Loveland and the Ehrmann Family from Dillon traveled together in October to Borneo, Malaysia. Stops included the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and the Sandakan area of Sabah. It is an amazing country. The people were very friendly and hospitable. The most exciting part of the trip was in the Sandakan area, as we were able to experience the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Check it out on the web! The seafood and vegetables in Sabah were incredible and abundant. A trip out on the Kinabatangan River is definitely worth the 2+ hour bus ride on a bumpy dirt road. (Hornbills, Proboscis monkeys, Macaques, Monitor Lizards, snakes and more abound!)
Travel tip: Map out your trip and destinations in advance. Book your accommodations and special tours in advance such as Turtle Islands as they fill up quickly. We found it very easy to travel around with the children, transport by plane, trains and buses. But don’t fill your entire agenda, keep time aside to enjoy a stroll along a dirt road to talk to the locals and experience the sights and sounds of the region. Don’t be surprised to see a lot of plastic laying around, or even in the water when you are out snorkeling (the fish are great, none-the-less). A true reminder to reduce, reuse and recycle and educate others around you to do the same.
