Adams County – Two infant boys and a man were killed Wednesday night in a head-on collision on Colorado 2 near Commerce City.

The speed limit on the road is 65 mph, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Eric Wynn.

“It’s a mess; there is debris scattered everywhere,” Wynn said.

The accident happened at 7:06 p.m.

Wynn said a Mitsubishi Eclipse carrying two men and the babies was southbound on two-lane Colorado 2 when the driver decided to pass vehicles ahead of him.

Meanwhile, the driver of a Dodge 3500 pickup truck was northbound.

In an apparent effort to avoid a collision, both drivers swerved onto the east side of the highway and then into a ditch, where they slammed into each other, Wynn said.

Both infants, who were in car seats, were thrown from the Eclipse.

One died at the scene, and the other died at Children’s Hospital.

A male passenger in the Eclipse was taken to University Hospital, where he died.

The driver of the Eclipse was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. His condition was unknown.

The driver of the Dodge pickup was taken to an unspecified hospital, and his condition was also unknown.

As to the emotional impact on medical personnel who responded to the scene, Wynn said, “We’re human.”
