Who: Janet Stickland of Fowler, Mary Anne and Bob Maddock, Frederick, Colorado

Where: North Cape, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada

Out and about: North Cape Lighthouse is just one of 20 lighthouses, many of which can be visited on this island of magnificent landscapes and warm water beaches. July and August offer the best opportunity for enjoying swimming, kayaking, boating and sailing. Cyclists and hikers can traverse the island from tip to tip via the 170-mile Confederation Trail through some of the most picturesque scenery on PEI. Golfers will find over 25 top-quality golf courses but the stunning views can make concentration difficult. And the Islanders offer a relaxed style of service that makes you feel like a welcome friend.

Travel tip: PEI shellfish is not be missed, the lobster, mussels and oysters are world famous. Watch them being unloaded fresh off the boats. And a trip to Prince Edward Island would not be complete without a stop to at least one of several of the Anne of Green Gables sites. Also, recycling is strictly enforced but we found it easy to comply. Cool ocean breezes can come up at any time, so bring a light jacket.
