Who: Anne and Dan Berkeley from Littleton, Colorado
Where: Göteborg, (aka Gothenburg), Sweden
Out and about: In front of the Ship “East India Man, ” this ship’s namesake sank in the Göta river in 1745. It was discovered in 1985. The replica construction began in 1994. In 2005 the first voyage is scheduled for China, which is where the original ship was retuning from. The riverside area is being developed rapidly, so you may have to find this ship’s new pier unless you go in the next few months.
Travel tip: Call ahead for reservations on the English language tour. The guide was patient and friendly. There are books available to purchase at the shop if you want to know more. The food appears to be good in the Café, but they closed before our tour was over, so it is best to plan ahead. East India Man is on the opposite side of the river from the main part of Göteborg, but is easily reached by watertaxi from the Lilla Borman stop on the Tram system. It is on the same side as the Volvo Museum and factory.
Göteborg is a big little town, and is most enjoyable to explore. The Haga neighborhood is most delightful. Göteborg also has a world-class Symphony orchestra: www.gso.se. We found the Swedish people friendly and patient with tourists. The language problems were easily overcome with a little mutual effort. We recommend and encourage you to visit Göteborg, Sweden.
