Out and about: The 3,000 ft² relief map is a great place to get oriented. A regular map does not do justice to the spectacular scenery. Beautiful volcanoes rise 11,000′ to 14,000′ along the coast. The central highlands have rugged and diverse scenery with market towns that are famous for beautiful crafts and religious festivals. Intense agriculture on small tracts is practiced on nearly every accessible (and some seemingly inaccessible) slope and valley. There are numerous Mayan ruins in the northern Petén jungle, with intriguing Tikal as the largest and best restored. Beautifully designed and crafted weavings are the pride of the indigenous Mayan population. World-class fishing for sailfish is an option on the Pacific coast, where we caught and released 67 in one day!
