Out and about: As veteran cruisers we like to take shore excursions that offer something unique and different! We were fortunate to be able to take the “DUCK BOAT TOUR” in Honolulu in December 2004. These amphibious trucks were designed in just 38 days in 1942. The Duck, which featured a boat-like exterior and a rear propeller, carried troops, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies directly from ships anchored offshore to where they were needed inland. GMC manufactured 20,000 “Ducks” between 1942 and 1945. Our guided tour included sightseeing in Honolulu followed by a cruise thru a lagoon adjacent to Sand Island.
Travel tip: If you take this excursion, be prepared for the elements! The engine is noisy, there is minimal protection from the elements – but, it was an educational and fun experience!
