A Denver Safeway worker filed a complaint against the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 1, alleging that the union is wrongly withholding dues from his paycheck.
Robert Wilson, who works at a Denver Safeway distribution center, has alleged in a complaint sent to the National Labor Relations Board’s Denver regional office that union officials took dues from his paycheck even after he resigned in 2003.
In Colorado, union dues may be collected from nonmembers in workplaces where the union contract includes a so-called union security clause. Those dues must be only for the amount of the union’s collective bargaining costs.
Wilson, who is represented by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, alleges that the union has refused to provide him a breakdown on what his dues pay for.
Officials from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 1 office in Northglenn declined to comment Thursday.
Wayne Benson, assistant to the regional director of the NLRB’s office, said his office will investigate the matter.
