Who: John and Louise Stevenson of Golden, Colorado
Where: West Temple and the Towers of the Virgins, Zion National Park, Springdale, Utah
Out and about: Zion National Park is located in the “Grand Circle” of National Parks, National Monuments, Historical areas, and Recreational areas in southern Utah. There is an entrance fee. The Park offers many spectacular scenic views (cliffs of sandstone are 2000 feet high). There are chances to observe animals and wild flowers. Summer rainstorms provide many spectacular but short-lived waterfalls. Many hiking trails are available for people of all abilities-short hikes (30 minutes) on paved trails to longer backcountry trails (2 day back packing trips), self- guided trails, and biking trails. Campgrounds and lodging can be found in the Park and in nearby towns. Also available are the Visitor Center and the Zion Museum. Since summers are crowded, free shuttle buses are used for transportation in Zion Canyon. Park Ranger-naturalists offer guided nature walks and evening illustrated talks pertaining to the many features of the Park’s geology, human history, and plant and animal life. Winters are more relaxed and less crowded and less traffic, but cold and sunny. Icicles may form on the canyon walls along some trails.
Travel tip: Take clothes appropriate for the season and bring a camera and plenty of water, and sunscreen.
