Who: Julie Hulstein of Littleton, Colorado
Where: Djurgården – Stockholm, Sweden
Out and about: Stockholm is the largest City in Scandinavia – one-third of Stockholm is water and it is built on 14 islands. The island of Djurgården, a royal park near the center of Stockholm, is home to Skansen – the first open-air museum in the world. Skansen was founded for the purpose of showing how people lived and worked in different parts of Sweden in times gone by.150 historic buildings have been moved to Skansen (a 200 acre park) from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. It perfectly displays Sweden’s cultural history.
Travel tip: I was fortunate enough to travel there with my Swedish boyfriend who was an excellent tour guide and interpreter, although English is prevalent in Sweden, so it is easy to get along in the big cities without speaking the language. Sweden is beautiful to visit in the summer time – long days with warm weather. Be sure to experience the beauty of at least a few of the 24,000 islands in the Stockholm archipelago via boat and foot. Also, Sweden was surprisingly expensive, so be prepared to go over budget!
